Angel at my Table
Melbourne Art Fair, 2024

“There are multiple layers of narratives in Stockdale’s work, most prominently the fact that the exhibition was sparked by the recent death of a close friend’s son. There is the apparent element of the ghostly and the supernatural, but also tenderness, grief and longing. no son rise features a portrait made from unrisen bread encased behind museum glass, signaling vitality and protection. ArtsHub was told that the bread has been treated to last … forever.

“Jacqui explains that her art making is a personal ritual, which acts as a surrogate for the loss of ritual in her own future of western ‘advanced’ capitalism. During the making process, for instance, her Calaveras Catrinas have been imbued with unique personalities and narratives, to then double as subjects for her paintings. “

“Angel at My Table is my tribute to my dear friend the remarkable Tasmanian artist, Gay Hawkes, who tragically lost her son in September 2023. When I heard the news, my studio transformed into a space to process the loss and suddenly, the symbols and props I’d been using for years found new meaning, coming together with a powerful sense of clarity. La Catrina, with her dramatic and humorous take on death became a central muse in this work. Other inspirations blended into this tribute include the Danse Macabre, the fierce Hindu deity Kali Ma, Marina Abramovic's Self-Portrait with Skeleton, and Michelangelo’s La Pietà, capturing the image of a mother cradling her lost son.”
