Nature and her Beast
2007
“What’s remarkable about this technique is that Stockdale never creates a painting for the specific purpose of cutting it up. Her studio is strewn with nudes, landscapes, and sketches of masks: pre-existing narratives which she pieces together, and then paints on as a whole. What this means is that disparate objects can be made to fit harmoniously and exactly; strokes in violently opposing directions are joined together on the one plane. Front-facing masks have bodies which are twisted askew; restful designs are cut into aggressive shapes.”
